Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing Masaka Hospital

The Uganda Protectorate Government started Masaka School Of Comprehensive Nursing in 1946 as a training institution for ex—service men that had served in World War II to offer them medical skills. Initially the school was part of Masaka Hospital until in 1998 when it was transferred to the Ministry of Education and Sports. The core mandate of the School is to train a nurses who upon graduation, can be able to provide comprehensive nursing services to communities, homes, schools, industries, hospitals and other institutions.

The vision of Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing is to be an internationally reputable nursing training institution. The mission of Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing is to produce a competent and committed comprehensive nurse.

Ownership

The school is a Government-aided tertiary institution, under the ownership of the Uganda Government, Ministry of Education and Sports. It was established as Masaka School of Nursing but the name has since changed to Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing for the training of Diploma Comprehensive Nurses.

Mandate

The mandate of the school is to provide nursing training. This mandate is derived from the constitution of Uganda 1995; the Education act 1964; the Education Sector Investment Plan 2003, the University and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2003, and other education policies and regulations.

Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing values taking action that is based on democratic engagement and active participation in decision making. This promotes ownership, and motivates the parties involved.

Commitment:

As a school, we fully appreciate that in the world to day there are many political, social and economic problems which if not watched and ignored can affect commitment of staff. All levels of staff promise to be committed to realization of the vision of the school. This commitment will also be inculcated in the nurses going through the school.

Compassion:

The school strives to produce nurses that have a strong feeling of empathy for the people they attend to, by doing everything possible to give a helping hand. This value is aimed at enabling patients and their caregivers feel comfortable when associating with nurses that have trained from Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing.

Cost effectiveness:

Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing, like many other public institutions is largely under funded. The institution in all work routines ensures optimum utilization of the resources at its disposal. All staff, students and other stakeholders must adhere to situations where several alternatives have to be considered before resources are spent.

Coherence:

Delivery of quality health services calls for a team that closely works together. Masaka School of Comprehensive Nursing trains Nurses that can adequately fit in work situations that are multicultural and multidisciplinary, but united in the name of quality health services delivery.
